Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Chief James Comey Files Not Guilty Plea to Allegations of Falsehoods Congress
Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and impeding a congressional proceeding.
The former director's lawyer entered the plea representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.
His attorney stated he would try to have the case dismissed for several causes including that his client, a detractor of former President Trump, was being singled out.
Mr Comey was indicted shortly after Trump urged his top legal official to take action against him.
Judicial Process
In court on Wednesday, his attorney the legal representative told the court they planned to file various motions to terminate the case before a trial, claiming the government's case was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was improperly designated to handle the proceedings.
Mr Comey's case was initially managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under influence from Trump after his examination into an additional opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.
Judicial Environment
James Comey came across in good spirits as he came into the court on Wednesday, speaking with his legal team and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his spouse, Mrs Failor and child Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration dismissed.
After listening to the magistrate recite his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he grasped the allegations.
"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he told the court.
Previous Events
James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was fired about a few months into Donald Trump's first term as president. At the period, Mr Comey was directing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.
Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey sparked a backlash from liberal politicians when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was investigating Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a personal email system. Charges against Clinton were never brought, causing negative feedback from the Republican party as well.
Present Charges
Prosecutors assert Mr Comey provided false information to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They say he misled the Senate by stating he had not approved an individual at the FBI to leak to media organizations details about the FBI investigations.
Legal representatives also accuse Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, obstruct and slow" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.
Personal Comments
Through a recording Mr Comey shared to his social media after he was indicted, he said he was wrongly accused and charged Trump of acting like a "tyrant".
"We have known for years that there are costs to opposing the former president," he stated. "We will not live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Thus initiate a trial."
The accusations against James Comey surfaced after Trump posted on digital channels demanding his top legal official, the attorney general, prosecute James Comey and additional individuals.
