Chinese Ice Dancers Face Investigation After Displaying Toy Missile during Event
ISU officials have launched an investigation after a pair of Chinese figure skaters appeared holding what looked like a toy ballistic missile during a grand prix figure skating event.
Television video captured the skaters waiting with a sizable prop in the form of a missile marked “DF-61” as they awaited the judges' results in the “kiss and cry” area on Saturday.
The DF-61 represents a new Chinese-made ground-launched intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons, which was unveiled during a national ceremony recently.
Officials is aware that an inappropriate plush item appears to have been one of the objects thrown on to the rink by audience members after a routine during the competition,” the ISU commented via a release.
“The soft toy was then held by the skaters who had just performed. The ISU regrets this occurrence and will look into it more deeply.”
The duo placed in eighth place of 10 pairs in the ice dance event, which was won by the American pair from the US.
